Graham-Cassidy has a new Polar Payoff

Senator Murkowski opposed TrumpCare, and for good reason. She should oppose Graham-Cassidy too, in part because Alaska stands to lose $255 million in federal funding by 2026. Not to mention the 107,000 Alaskans with pre-existing conditions that would be hurt by this bill, and the 10,000 Alaskans relying on the ACA for treatment for opioid abuse whose care would be in jeopardy. And according to the Center for American Progress, 41,000 Alaskans will lose coverage.

Mitch McConnell will stop at nothing to bribe his way to victory. The Graham-Cassidy bill has a new slush fund for rural states that have higher health care costs. Conveniently, Alaska is one of only two states that fit the criteria to get the slush fund.

But the slush fund isn’t enough to make up for the devastating cuts that will affect Alaska’s rural hospitals or Alaskans currently covered through Medicaid or that get help affording insurance through subsidies. Senator Murkowski should reject Graham-Cassidy—with or without the Polar Payoff.

SAMPLE CALL SCRIPT

Caller: Hello! My name is [ ] and I’m calling from [part of state]. Can you tell me how Senator Murkowksi will vote on the Graham-Cassidy health care bill when it comes up for a vote?

Staffer: The Senator is still reviewing the text of the bill and hasn’t taken a position on it. There is no vote scheduled on that bill though.

Caller: I hope that Senator Murkowski will stay strong and oppose Graham-Cassidy. The bill has not gone through regular order, as Sen. Murkowski said it should when she opposed previous TrumpCare bills. The bill is just like other TrumpCare bills in that it destroys Medicaid, hurts children with disabilities, seniors, and even victims of natural disasters like Harvey and Irma. And we don’t even know how many people will lose coverage because the CBO hasn’t had enough time to review the bill.

Staffer: Senator Murkowski is committed to making sure that Alaskans get the coverage they need and that the bill reflects Alaska’s unique needs as a state.

Caller: I heard Mitch McConnell is trying to bribe Senator Murkowski into supporting this terrible bill with a provision that gives a slush fund to Alaska. But this bill would be so devastating for our state, that no special McConnell slush fund could make up for it. Senator Murkowski should oppose Graham-Cassidy.

Staffer: I’ll let the Senator know your thoughts.

Caller: Yes, please do. I will be watching this vote closely and I expect Senator Murkowski to oppose. Please take down my contact information so you can let me know what Senator Murkowski decides to do.
